3 practical tips for gifting art at Christmas

Sea Pinks, small original painting

Looking for a unique gift? Original art is a good choice, but can be a bit daunting… it’s such a personal thing!

My top three things to think about when buying original art as a gift at Christmas or special occasions:

1. Interior design style & art tastes

What’s their interior design style? Minimalism? Dark and moody interiors? Have they gone Farrow & Ball darks like Hague Blue and Railings? Modern minimalism?

What type of art do they already have at home? Abstract? Contemporary? Street art?

Thinking about how the person has styled their home is a good place to start, that’s where the painting will live.

2. Colours are important when choosing art

What colours do they love? Are they into monochrome, black and white art and photography? Do they love orange or pink? Neons? Dark and moody blues? Coastal style?

People often gravitate towards specific colours, and from talking to lots of people about buying art, colour is often the thing that they connect with in a painting.

3. Small painting or big statement painting?

A small painting makes a lovely thoughtful gift. It’s easy to wrap and post if you need to send it, it’s more affordable, and it’s usually easy to find a space for a small painting at home.

Small original paintings work really well sitting on a shelf, or as part of a gallery wall. Or perhaps to add interest in a little nook.

All paintings can hold a lot of emotion, and smaller ones have a really magical feel to them.

Larger paintings make a statement and are a very thoughtful way to mark a special occasion.

Bonus: framing your art

Some paintings come framed, others such as unframed works on paper would need to be framed before hanging on the wall.

There are lots of local framers, and it’s often good to work with one in your local area. I’ve worked with a few in Bristol including Hang Bristol.

I can help with framing choices, drop me a message if you’d like to discuss framing for any of my paintings.

Good luck :) if you have any questions at all about choosing art as a gift for someone please get in touch.
